Where Does Sun City Center’s Water Come From?
Sun City Center’s water supply mainly depends on a combination of groundwater and surface water sources. The Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department manages the water utility for Sun City Center.
The Floridan Aquifer System, a significant underground water source in Florida, provides the groundwater. Wells extract water from this aquifer, after which the water undergoes treatment and distribution to area residents and businesses.
Besides groundwater, Hillsborough County employs various sources of surface water. Among them, the Tampa Bypass Canal holds prominence. This artificial canal diverts water from the Hillsborough River during periods of high flow. After treatment, the canal’s water combines with the groundwater supply, fulfilling the water demand of not only Sun City Center but also other parts of the county.
Contaminants
The water sources for Sun City Center residences generally contain trace amounts of several different contaminants. To address this issue, local governments routinely test and provide reports on these. They are required to keep these levels below what is considered toxic, according to regulation.
