Where Does St. Petersburg’s Water Come From?

St. Pete’s drinking water comes from a combination of ground and surface water, which undergoes a three-step treatment process before being distributed to residents. St. Pete is part of Tampa Bay Water, which also supplies drinking water to Hillsborough County, Pasco County, Pinellas County, New Port Richey and Tampa.

Contaminants

The water sources for St. Petersburg residences generally contain trace amounts of several different contaminants. To address this issue, local governments routinely test and provide reports on these. They are required to keep these levels below what is considered toxic, according to regulation.

These include:

  • Arsenic
  • Chromium
  • Chlorine
  • Lead
  • Harmful bacteria

However, since residents only drink about 1% of the water in these systems, the government does not have the resources to eliminate all of these contaminants completely. It is the responsibility of residents to ensure their household has filtered water completely ideal for drinking, cooking, and all household uses.

Did You Know?

St. Petersburg, Florida, is well-known for its stunning beaches, downtown area, and museums. However, a fun fact about the city is its former nickname as the “City of Green Benches.” The city was once filled with numerous green benches in its streets and parks, giving rise to the nickname. However, in the 1970s, the city launched a revitalization campaign to modernize its image and attract more tourists, resulting in the replacement of the green benches. As a result, the city adopted a new nickname, “Sunshine City,” highlighting its warm weather and inviting atmosphere. The nickname is now even featured on the official seal of St. Petersburg.
