Where Does Sarasota’s Water Come From?
Sarasota mainly derives its water supply from a combination of groundwater and surface water sources.
Wells tap into the Floridan Aquifer, an extensive underground limestone formation that underlies a significant portion of Florida. This aquifer stands as a primary drinking water source for the state.
Supplementing this groundwater supply, the city also acquires surface water from nearby bodies like lakes and rivers. These sources offer additional water during periods of heightened demand or potential aquifer depletion.
The City of Sarasota Utilities Department typically oversees the administration and management of the city’s water utility.
Contaminants
The water sources for Sarasota residences generally contain trace amounts of several different contaminants. To address this issue, the Sarasota County government routinely tests and provides reports on this. They are required to keep these levels below what is considered toxic, according to regulation.
