Ozone, an unstable molecule releases a free radical which is very toxic to the majority of microorganisms in water.
Ozone purification offers advantages over a more extensive treatment like chlorination. These mostly have to do with the poisoning levels of chlorine when it reacts with other chemicals to form byproducts. Chlorine requires attention during the filtration procedure while ozone purification does not. Ozone purification does not give rise to poor-tasting water like swimming pool water, nor is it chemical active. Chlorine may actually react with other substances present and form compounds of a harmful nature. Ultra violet rays do not use heat or chemical preservatives of any kind during the filtration procedure. The point that it comes into contact with the organism is enough to inactivate it.
There are, however, drawbacks to ozone disinfection. Although the production of chemicals byproducts is less with ozone, it has been shown to produce a bit of bromate which is said to be a carcinogen. Pure water should contain little if any bromine. The second primary drawback is that ultra-violet filtration offers no recurring treatment. Unlike swimming pool water which preserves a presence in the water after the treatment, continuing to sterilize the water, ultra violet rays does not stay in the water. Any harmful bacteria that the rays skipped would remain in the water whereas chlorination would eliminate them. For this reason, a swimming pool water substance such as chloramine is sometimes added to water filtered by ultra violet rays after the fact.
