MEASURING WATER TURBIDITY

Turbidity of water is the measure of the optical property that causes light to be scattered and absorbed in water rather than being transmitted through straight line. Turbidity in water is caused by suspended particulates such as clay, organic and inorganic matter, algae, silt and maybe microorganisms. Turbidity measurement is important since it hinders the efficiency of disinfection which can result in unsafe drinking water.

Turbidity is measured using an instrument called nephelometer, which measures the amount of light that is scattered by hitting particles in water. It is a physical test rather than a chemical test. It is important in determining the safety of drinking water during the process of water treatment. It is an indicator of how well the water is being treated. If the effluent has unexpectedly high turbidity, then some adjustment like chemical feed rates may need be adjusted or filters may need to be backward or may need to be replaced.
