HEALTH EFFECTS OF SODIUM IN DRINKING WATER

High level of sodium in our drinking water has adverse effects on human health, especially young children. This is because young children have immature kidneys that are unable to control high levels of sodium in their bodies like adults. Also people with impaired kidneys have the same problem as young children. Older people are also vulnerable because blood pressure tends to rise with age and they have common heart-related diseases.

There are short-term and long-term health effects of sodium in human body.  High level of sodium has caused death among certain age groups, and is common because of recognition of the extreme salty taste. Short exposure of high level of sodium (e.g. from exposure of seawater known to have 30000mg/l of sodium) causes nausea, stomach ulcers, vomiting and inflammation, dehydration of organs, and coma.

Long term exposure has chronic effects. It has been linked with high blood pressure. Researchers revealed that high blood pressure is associated with heart disease, stroke and congestive heart failure. It is also associated with increased in stomach cancer, and reproductive and development effects.

Because of these effects, National Resources defense Council (NRDC) and EPA recommend keeping sodium intake at no more than 2400mg/day. If you doubt or not sure about the level of sodium in your drinking water, have a certified lab test the quality of your drinking water. You can contact companies such as Purity Bay El Paso to inspect your water, test the integrity of your well if you use one and give you tips on how to make your drinking water safe.
