EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, e.g. lakes, oceans, seas, rivers, aquifers, and ground water. It is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of the water that causes harm to the living things. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are released into the water bodies. This can be direct or indirect depending on the form of the pollutants released without proper treatment to remove the harmful compound.

Water pollution is categorized as a point source or a non-point source. Point source occurs when the pollutants is directly released into the water bodies. An example is when untreated sewages are released directly into the river. Non-point source occurs when the pollutants enters the water bodies from soil, ground water and from atmosphere through rain water. An example is the leaching out of nitrogen compounds from fertilized agriculture farms into the water bodies.

What are the effects of water pollution?

Water pollution has adverse effect on plants, animals and people using this water. It has become a global problem since it is a leading cause of deaths and diseases. It globally accounts to 14000 deaths daily. This is due to the poisonous drinking water and poisonous food animals (e.g. fish having poisonous chemical compounds in their body). Water pollution also leads to unbalanced river and lake ecosystems that fail to support full biological diversity. Deforestation due to acid rain is one of the main effects, mostly caused by release of toxic smoke into the air by factories.

Solutions to water pollution

There are various practical solutions to minimizing water pollution. This calls for sacrifice in terms of societal and monetary.  This is through recycling of used materials which its production causes water pollution, and in everyday life there is a great deal that can be done to minimize water pollution. For example, never flush non-degradable products such as diapers or plastic applicators. This damage sewage treatment and end up littering beaches and water.

Another solution to water pollution is the correct disposal of hazardous household product and recycling of used car oil. Paints, cleaning solvents, polishes, pool chemicals, insecticides and other household chemicals should never be drain into sinks and toilets. These products contain harmful substances such as petroleum distillates, ammonia, formaldehyde, sodium hypochlorite and phenol which end up in nearby water bodies.

Recommendations

Because of the adverse effects of the polluted water on the health of human beings, it is recommended that water for domestic purposes, especially for drinking should be treated before use.
