Dissolved oxygen in water is important for sustaining aquatic life and limiting bacteria activities. The minimum expected oxygen levels should be between four and five parts per million dissolved in water to maintain aquatic life. Therefore dissolved oxygen testing is usually done in water bodies to test the its levels in water and determine its ability to sustain life.
The procedure for testing is more complicated. First, you need to measure the atmospheric pressure using barometer and then fill a bottle with water until it is overflowing to ensure that no bubbles are caught. Add eight drops of manganese sulfate solution and alkaline potassium iodide azide. Close the bottle and ensure no air is inside and shake to mix the chemicals with the sample. When oxygen is detected, there will be a brownish or orange precipitate. You then need to allow the precipitate to settle down. When the upper part is clear, mix again and waits for any changes to occur. Add sulphuric acid and mix until all precipitate has dissolved. Based upon the level of oxygen present, the water will turn clear yellow or brown-orange color.
